On the 9th of December this Facebook contest draws the attention of BBC News where their science editor Paul Rincon reports Digital Globes contest.
With both man-made and natural phenomenon at the focal point of the contest from all around the world, Facebook users have had two whole weeks to vote for their favourite satellite image of the year. Communities from all around the globe are getting involved voting for the images that mean something to them whether they are feeling patriotic and voting for a location in their home country or voting for images that can only be described as spectacular.
Only the top five images will make the final round with voting ending today. As it stands the most popular are as follows:

- Croatia, Feb. 16, 2013 – Galešnjak (Island of Love) – 4.9k Likes
- Belfast, Northern Ireland, Nov. 3, 2013 – “Wish,” a large-scale art work – 1.7k Likes
- Aleppo, Syria, May 26, 2013 – The Citadel of Aleppo -1.5k Likes
- Utah, USA, April 22, 2013 – Colorado River *positioned to give an interesting optical illusion. -1.3k Likes
These pictures are set to interest geologists, artists and space enthusiasts alike. Concepts of destruction, creation and hope are all portrayed in this year’s shortlist.
